This web page takes advantage of a sophisticated video server software package that can "stream" real-time video and live pictures to any remote viewer connected to the Internet. The advantage of this system is that it does not require the installation of special plug-ins or any complicated software on the remote viewer's browser. Since the client software was written in Java (native web-based programming language), all that is required for viewing is an Internet connection and a standard web browser like Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator.

Because my workstation sends video directly to your Java client, a web server is installed on my computer at home which allows your browser to connect to my system. Because I do not have a static Internet address, my IP changes every time I connect to the Internet. Although this IP address uniquely identifies my computer on the Internet, it cannot be hard-coded into this page without it changing the next time I reconnect. Instead, every time I log on to the Internet my new IP address is automatically registered with a name server (DNS server) to correspond with a static host name I have been permanently assigned. This host name never changes and provides your web browser a direct link to my home computer so you can access my video stream.
